THE SOUTHERN UPLANDS SPORTIVE 2008...
So, that was the debut Southern Uplands Sportive, then.
2 years in the planning, 4 months to get permission from 4 separate organisations to use just 3 miles of road, 287 entrants, 210 starters including one each from Norway and Italy, 105 (or 40) miles, 2,250 metres of climbing (according to one rider’s GPS), 35 support staff, £100-worth of bacon rolls, innumerable pints of Guinness, two 8 foot signs to stop people falling off AFTER the finish, 7 car parks, 1 rider who threw up right on the finish line, a photographer who reacted quickly enough to capture the event for posterity, 350 ‘incomers’ and more than 12 pages of glowing post-event feedback.
Here it is, the whole story of the UK's first summit sportive. Enjoy, and see you all in '09!
