END OF THE ROAD FOR THE RADAR
After 3 hugely successful years the highest road in Scotland has, for now, seen its last sportive finish.
In a recent statement NATS (operators of the radar station and owners of the road to the summit of Lowther Hill) said; 'It has been decided that the Company as a matter of policy will not permit the use of its sites/access roads for leisure uses in future for health and safety and resource reasons'.
The upshot of this decision is that the tortous road up to the radar station at the top of Lowther Hill can no longer be used as the finale to July's RADAR RIDE.
After taking some time to evaluate other potential sites for the finish line sus8events have decided to withdraw the event.
Organiser Peter Smith said; "The decision to withdraw permission to use NATS' road came as a complete bolt out of the blue. Whilst everyone here is massively disappointed we all recognise the rationale behind the decision - there is, after all, a working radar station at the summit of Lowther. We were always hugely grateful to NATS for allowing access in the first place and for supporting us in each of the last 3 years."
Through the auspices of this web-site the organisers would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered the RADAR RIDE in the past 3 years with an extra special nod to those who joined us in all 3 years. We would also like to thank everyone who supported the event and helped out in unumerable ways. Without you there would not have been an event in the first place.
We started off back in 2007 with a crazy idea for a unique event. That idea became a reality in 2008. Although all good things do come to an end we never anticipated the end coming so soon. Despite this everyone associated with the SOUTHERN UPLANDS SPORTIVE and the RADAR RIDE has had a blast.
Thank you and we'll see you all out on the road sometime soon.
